BG Offering the Chance to Experience Life as a TeacherBishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln is inviting applications from students to take part in the popular Student Associates Scheme and experience working alongside teachers in a school setting.
The Student Associates Scheme (SAS) is designed to give students in Higher Education an opportunity to experience teaching, in either the primary or secondary sector. It is aimed at students registered full-time or part-time on HND programmes, foundation degrees, undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. The placements give priority to male maths and science students, giving them the chance to spend 15 days within a school setting.
Funded by the TDA (Training and Development Agency for Schools), it has been designed to balance a generous bursary with valuable work experience and an insight into the working life of a teacher. Students receive a tax free payment of £40 per day for their school-based experiences.
The Student Associates Scheme offers an excellent opportunity to support young people in schools by:
• Helping to raise attainment in your subject
• Helping to raise aspirations and as a consequence
• Widening participation in education
Danielle, participant in the Student Associates Scheme from BG - "The Student Associates Scheme has changed my life. I took part in the scheme during the second year of my BA (Hons) Education Studies and English degree. My degree course had given me excellent placement experiences in the primary sector, and the SAS gave me the opportunity to gain experience in a secondary setting. Without this opportunity, I may not have spent time in this sector and so would not have had consequent doors opened for me."
"The training entry profile I had to complete consisted of 14 core goals. Collecting this evidence gave me a direct understanding of the expectations of a teacher, allowing me to focus my experiences constructively. I was placed in a superbly helpful school that did everything possible to aid my knowledge and provided me with a supportive mentor. The school had a strong emphasis on training, which gave me a clear insight into what would be expected of me on a PGCE course."
"The SAS inspired me to gain further secondary experience in a different school, and definitely helped me on my next degree placement. I have now started a secondary English with Drama PGCE. I owe my future ambitions to the experience that I gained on the scheme. The SAS has enabled me to enhance my personal development and to be reflective and perceptive of my strengths and weaknesses. I strongly recommend anyone who has a desire to teach to take part in the SAS - you will not regret it."
