Volunteering Overseas

Volunteering overseas can give you a whole new perspective on life, and make a world of difference to someone else's life, too. There are a huge number of opportunities to use your skills and time - travelling independently or as part of a group. You could spend part of your vacation abroad, or think about taking a longer period volunteering once you graduate. There's loads of help out there to get you thinking and set you on your way, and you could even get financial support from the BG Generations Foundation Fund.

For information about current vacancies, check out these sites:

do-it is an online, searchable database of volunteering opportunities, and it has an excellent section on volunteering overseas, which gives a good overview of things to think about and helpful resources and contacts. A great place to start researching!

Voluntary Service Overseas
Voluntary Service Overseas is a long-established and highly respected international development organisation. They provide placements for 1-2 years, wherever the need is greatest and are usually looking for people with transferable skills and some employment experience. They also have two youth projects – Global Exchange and Youth for Development.

Highway Projects
Highway Projects is a short-term mission organisation which takes people to the Middle East; its work is explicitly Christian and so you’d need to feel comfortable volunteering within this kind of agency. A former BG student is very involved with the organisation and regularly leads teams.

Platform 2
Platform 2 is a fully-funded global volunteering scheme for 18 to 25 year olds who wouldn't otherwise be able to visit a developing country and get involved with global issues of justice and poverty. It is funded by UKaid from the Department for International Development. and run by Christian Aid and BUNAC. It’s likely that the project won’t run for very much longer, so if you’re interested in getting involved, check out the website and find out more now.
